| MJCI, GMA join forces to promote horse-racing industry Posted: 13 Feb 2011 01:06 PM PST MANILA, Feb. 14 (PNA) - Horse-racing operator Manila Jockey Club Inc. (MJCI) and media solutions firm GMA New Media Inc. (NMI) have signed an agreement where both parties agreed to expand the betting reach of the sport. MJCI executive vice president and chief operating officer Alfonso Reyno III said they entered into a joint venture with NMI to "upgrade the leisure it provides to people." For its part, NMI president and chief operating officer Judd Gallares said they will provide all the technology needed to make horse-racing betting available over the Internet and mobile phones. Gallares said the GMA Network Inc. subsidiary and Asia's oldest horse racing club will invest P10 million each into the new venture. "People can begin betting via new platforms during the middle of this year," he added. Reyno said the company's partnership with NMI will "expand the market of the present racing industry and upgrade the multimedia coverage applied by the company." He added that the joint venture will lead the Philippines to become upbeat in horse-racing industry like the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, and London. | Horse racing abandoned at Newbury after horses die Posted: 12 Feb 2011 05:37 PM PST NEWBURY, ENGLAND : Horse racing at the Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire, England was abandoned on Saturday after two horses suddenly died, organizers said. The incident happened just before the start of Race 1 and it was not immediately clear what killed the horses. "Very sadly two horses have died in the parade ring prior to the first race. Vets are carrying out inspections," a spokesperson said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff involved." The spokesperson later added in a second statement that racing has been abandoned for Saturday due to the incident, but provided no other details about the deaths. "The reasons are unknown at this stage," it said.
