Horse racing: 9 races on Sunday

Horse racing: 9 races on Sunday

Horse racing: 9 races on Sunday

Posted: 05 Feb 2011 08:44 AM PST

Tomorrow the 4th racing meeting will be held containing 7 trot and 2 flat races over the longer distances. The trotters will be competing over 2640m whilst thoroughbreds will race over the 1750m distance.

As always in these kind of races, the big question will be if all the horses will be sent out to try their utmost. Unfortunately there are certain owners who still believe that by pulling their horses for a number of races they will be fairing better in upcoming championships. If one takes a look back to past seasons, this is certainly many times untrue as one never knows what condition the horse will be in a few weeks from today. Luckily the stewards seem to be opening their eyes to this and disciplinary action is being taken on those drivers that very evidently pull up their horses.

I do not wish to be misunderstood regarding this issue as I know that sometimes horses do need light races and not to be pushed so hard but it is very unfair on the racing community when owners blatantly go out and declare that they will only try their best in the championships. This is very unfair on those owners who do wish to win a race as those that do not are taking up their place and could end up hindering them.

In tomorrow's programme we have a Premier category race in which we have two new horses participating one of which is Swedish and who unfortunately did not make it in time to register for the U*Bet Championship.

The two flat races are reserved for Class A and Class B and barring any scratches we will see 6 horses in each race including 3 new horses.

These are the new horses in this programme:

U*Bet Finalists Now Known

During last Sunday's 10 races we finally got to know all the horses that will be racing in the U*Bet Championship finals. As always we had our fair share or surprises in that some favourites did not make it and outsiders shone through. Three winners were also taken in to be dope tested – Notice As, Gigo Lloyd and Robin Lou.

During this week a press conference was held during which the draws for the Gold, Silver, Copper and Bronze finals were drawn. The draws for the Premier Category had been already drawn a couple of weeks ago. The press conference was addressed by Dr Matthew Brincat, Chairman of the Malta Racing Club as well as Mr Mario Cassar General Director of Maltco Lotteries who both expressed their extreme satisfaction in the way this sponsorship has worked out over the past three years. This championship is now being looked upon by the owners as a permanent fixture to which to look forward to and prepare Swedish horses. This is evident by their enthusiasm to participate and by the good number of new horses that registered to participate.

During his brief speech, Mr Cassar also hinted that in the very near future a new project will be announced although he did not divulge any details.

The owners present all expressed their gratitude to Maltco Lotteries for sponsoring this championship for Swedish horses. The finals will be held on Thrusday 10th and Sunday 13th February.
