| Horse racing deserves balanced news coverage Posted: 06 Jan 2011 08:04 PM PST As the president of Calder Casino & Race Course, I write in response to Linda Robertson's Dec. 26 front-page article Horse racing losing patrons to casinos, the first in a three-part series on ``vanishing sports.'' While her series certainly points to the tough competitive realities that Florida's parimutuels face, her representation of Calder and its racing operations is incomplete and, in my opinion, inaccurate. What's discouraging is that she could have contacted us and allowed Calder to offer additional facts about its business operations and perspective on the investment that Florida parimutuels have made in casino-style gaming as a means to bolster racing purses and the tracks' ability to reinvest in their facilities. Instead, Robertson largely used on-the-record input from one passionate, but discouraged, trainer. In short, the article was missing balance, something we expect from the venerable Miami Herald. The tone of the story was unfair to horsemen, our employees and the fans who attend races at Calder -- all of whom continue to show their dedication for a sport that provides jobs and income for families across the state while supporting an important Florida agribusiness. Thoroughbred horse racing throughout the country does not currently enjoy the media coverage that it did during its heyday; we are fortunate in South Florida that The Miami Herald has committed to covering racing in its Sports section. Fair and balanced media coverage of our sport and its current challenges is essential if we are to successfully recruit new fans to horse racing.
