Steeplechase horse racing returns to Monmouth Park Racetrack

Posted: 22 Sep 2010 06:15 PM PDT

OCEANPORT — Monmouth Park Racetrack will host the Monmouth Park-Meridian Health Steeplechase Festival on Saturday, marking a return of the steeplechase racing tradition in Monmouth County.

The event had been called the Monmouth Hunt.

"We are very proud to partner with Meridian Health and the National Steeplechase Association to make this not only an exciting day of racing, but a wonderful day that benefits the entire community," said Dennis Robinson, president and CEO of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which operates the racetrack, in a statement.

Proceeds from the event will benefit patient care programs at Meridian medical centers, which include Jersey Shore University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children's Medical Center in Neptune, Ocean Medical Center in Brick and Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

The event begins with traditional flat races, followed by steeplechase races, where the speed of flat-track racing is combined with hurdles for the horses to jump over. Festivities also include family friendly activities, food and entertainment, organizers said.

Ticket prices range from $35 to $200, and $1,200 for a luxury box. For tickets and sponsorship packages, call 877-748-4667. Visit www.MeridianSteeplechase.com or www.MonmouthPark.com for more information.

Down! Set! And they're off!

You may not be used to seeing those words strung together, but you will the weekend of Nov. 13-14. That's because the University of Louisville and Churchill Downs are partnering for "Pigskins & Ponies Presented by Kroger," a special ticket package for the second weekend in November.

For $25 football and horse-racing fans can purchase a limited ticket package that will include a seat in the new upper deck of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium for the Cardinals' Nov. 13 football game (a kickoff time has yet to be announced) against Big East Conference rival South Florida and a reserved seat (with racing program) the next day on Millionaires Row or Skye Terrace for the races, which are set to start at 12:40 p.m.

The package also includes a commemorative "Pigskins & Ponies" sleeved fleece blanket in Cardinal red that will bear the logos of Churchill Downs' Twin Spires and UofL football. Fans will able to pick up their sleeved fleece blankets beginning Nov. 10.

The weekend will also include a drawing at halftime of the USF-UofL game for a box seat to the 2011 Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. As well as opportunities for fans to participate in on-track drawings before each of Sunday's 10 races for tickets to 2011 UofL home football games.

The limited "Pigskins & Ponies Presented by Kroger" ticket package are available for purchase now through Churchill Downs' online ticket office.
