Horses hit the track at the Western Montana Fair Friday for the first time in three years. Spectators packed the stands happy to see racing return. The sun came out for the races. But rain puddles stayed on the track. It was pretty sloppy. There were at least a couple spills. But track betters have been saving up for this. Bill Austin says, "we got the winning ticket, 1-3-5...Missoula County Fair here we are."Fans have made the first day of the races a special event. Two young women wore hats reminiscent of the Kentucky Derby.Fan Myrna Nyberg says she's glad horse racing is back. But she says the track is too muddy.Fans filled at least 80 percent of the space in the grandstands. About 200 horses and jockeys are running. The betting booths stayed busy. Here in the grandstands, it wasn't a day to reflect on the recession. There were people spending money.
