Horse Racing: Weymes scoops Ayr double

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 04:14 PM PDT

Weymes is currently enjoying the best season of his career and has been a beneficiary of trainer Karl Burke's suspension.

Both Ursula, who won the Watch Live Racing At victorchandler.com Fillies' Handicap, and Frontline Girl, successful in the Pla

y Poker At victorchandler.com Handicap, were trained by Burke in their younger days.

The victory of Ursula was obviously expected in some quarters as she was supported from 11-1 into 8-1 before beating Jeannie Galloway by a length and a half. "She just takes a few runs to hit her form and the strong pace helped her today," said Weymes.

"We thought she would have a good each-way chance and everything panned out right."

Frontline Girl was very impressive when quickening up down the centre of the track to beat Hosanna by three and three-quarter lengths. "Basically she missed most of last year and it's taken an age to get her cherry-ripe," said Weymes. "I was a little bit disappointed with her last time at Doncaster but she was down in grade today."

Another jockey in double form at Ayr was Tony Hamilton, who was the man to take advantage of Paul Hanagan's day on the sidelines on Richard Fahey's Bahamian Sunset (15-8 favourite) in the Bet At Victor Chandler On 08000 78 78 78 Median Auction Maiden Stakes. Third on her debut at Redcar, she had to work hard to get to the front but saw off the 33-1 chance Calypso Magic by three-quarters of a length, with 66-1 shot Point Du Jour half a length away in third.

Hamilton also scored on Linda Perratt's The Bear (6-1) in the Best Odds Guaranteed At Victor Chandler Handicap, despite having only run on Saturday night.

Bryan Smart's Don't Call Me looks to have a decent future after notching up his third win from just five starts in the Play Casino At victorchandler.com Handicap. The 13-8 favourite needed every yard of the mile to get into top gear under Tom Eaves and denied Weymes and Elliott a treble as Lord Raglan was second. Aidan O'Brien's son Joseph rode his first winner in Britain on Amy Weaver's Grams And Ounces (6-4 favourite) in the Bet Know At victorchandler.com Apprentice Handicap.

Hanagan, meanwhile, heads to Musselburgh tonight. He kicks off with Sensei in the toteplacepot Maiden Auction Stakes at 6.50 - one of five rides for the championship contender.

Horse Racing: Hanagan hankers for double

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 03:37 AM PDT

He comes back from a ban yesterday to ride at Beverley this afternoon (Tues) before flying North for a full book of six rides on the East Lothian track and Bold Bidder can prove best of them in the Toteexacta Nursery (7.20pm). The filly was slowly into stride and very inexperienced when well beaten on her debut at Haydock in May, but showed more promise when sixth back at that track a fortnight later.

Both those races were over six furlongs, but she relished the drop back to the minimum trip when winning at Carlisle three weeks ago and top weight may not stop her from following up tonight over the minimum trip again.

Zabeel Tower went into my notebook when he finished fourth at the last meeting here and the gelding can complete the Hanagan double in the concluding event - the Toteswinger Handicap (9.20pm). The seven-year-old has won seven of his 55 races with three of those victories coming over this course and distance. The last of them was just short of two years ago and he has run 20 times since then, but he was a good second over this course and distance on one occasion last summer.

He was having his first outing for seven months when unplaced over 6F at Hamilton last month, but turned in a fine effort four days later on this track when he swept through on the inside to lead inside the final furlong, but was headed in the last 50 yards and tired so quickly, he could finish only fourth. That was over a mile and the drop back to seven furlongs should be just up his street, while the handivcapper has also dropped him a handy 3lb in the ratings.

Boundaries carries the same colours as Bold Bidder although in a different stable and can open his winning account in the Toteplacepot Maiden Auction Stakes (6.50pm).This colt is trained by Tim Easterby who has his string in great shape and it is interesting that although the youngster is now qualified for handicaps after three outings, Easterby keeps him to maiden company.

Mark Johnston has a good record on the seaside track, although he has managed only one winner from ten runners here this term. But his team have hit top gear and Ginger Jack can win the Cannacord Genuity Handicap (7.50).

The colt was successful twice on the all-weather during the winter and although his initial efforts on turf this term were disappointing, he was quite badly hampered when finishing eighth on his penultimate start at Haydock. And he bounced back when making much of the running to score there earlier this month. This tight track should suit his running.

Joe Rowntree's selection: 6.50 Boundaries; 7.20 Bold Bidder; 7.50 Ginger Jack; 9.20 Zabeel Tower.
