Horse Racing Notebook: Belmont lacks luster

Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters?

Buffalo's roaring back from a 35-3, second-half deficit to beat the Oilers in the 1993 NFL playoffs?

Al Oerter's upsetting four world-record holders to win four straight Olympic discus golds?

You could pick 20 astounding human performances and never approach consensus on No. 1.

In horse racing, the clear No. 1 rises above all — Secretariat's devastation of both the 1973 Belmont Stakes' field and the world record for a 1½-mile race.

Most horses struggle to run six furlongs in 1 minute, 12 seconds. Secretariat did it twice in the same race. He covered the Belmont's 1½-mile (12-furlong) distance in 2 minutes, 24 seconds. Jockeys on trailing horses needed binoculars to spot Secretariat.

Saturday's Belmont Stakes has nothing close to a Secretariat. Maybe it never again will. Yet the third Triple Crown event still gets heavily touted. (What else would you expect for a New York event?) Despite that touting, this race has become a display window for the mediocre.

Last year, Summer Bird won at 11-1 odds. He has not been the same since.

In 2008, Da'Tara wired the field. Da'Who? The colt went off at 38-1, soundly beating heavily favored Big Brown, who finished last. Da'Tara won only one other race despite starting 17 times. The 2006 winner, Jazil, also scored only two lifetime wins.

In 2007, Rags To Riches became the first filly to win the Belmont in 102 years. But if you sneezed twice, you missed her career. A minor injury retired her after seven races.

A look at the 2010 field also sends a message of mediocrity. Super Saver and Lookin At Lucky, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, are skipping the Belmont.

Several starters have no portfolio. One of racing's most significant indicators is the Beyer performance number. In a major stakes race such as the Belmont, with its 12 entrants, you'd expect to find 10 or 15 Beyer numbers of 100 or higher. In this field's 85 career races, only two Beyer marks have reached 100. First Dude achieved a 101 for his front-running near-win at Pimilco. Ice Box ran a 100 at the Kentucky Derby. Both performances snared second place.

Ice Box and First Dude look to be favored on Saturday. Expect Drosselmeyer and Stately Victor to offer better wagering value. Interactif is a bit of a mystery in his return to dirt. His last six races have been on synthetic or grass surfaces. He'll challenge First Dude early. We will then learn if he possesses enough endurance to score an upset.

3 night cards at SHRP

Sam Houston Race Park offers live programs tonight and Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday racing at 5 p.m. Gates open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to accommodate simulcast customers, including those who will stay for the Belmont Stakes at 5:32 p.m.
