| Horse Racing Capsules: Rescue in the works, but NYRA warns of layoffs Posted: 21 May 2010 03:49 PM PDT ALBANY, N.Y. — Despite a deal in the works to save the state's thoroughbred racing season, the New York Racing Association is still warning employees they could face layoffs as early as June 9 if it has to shut down. NYRA said Friday a legally required notice was sent to more than 1,400 workers as the cash-strapped racing operator said it might have to close the Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga tracks after the Belmont Stakes. NYRA told The Associated Press it had no comment. Gov. David Paterson said Tuesday he expects the Legislature to approve a loan of $15 million to $25 million to keep NYRA operating until it gets a share of revenue from video slot machines planned for Aqueduct. Lawmakers return to session next week. NYRA, plagued for years by poor management and sinking revenues, emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008 with the help of a $105 million state bailout that sent $75 million to creditors and $30 million to help NYRA until the Aqueduct "racino" opened. At the same time, its state franchise to run racing was renewed for 25 years. But the long-delayed plan to put 4,500 video slots at Aqueduct foundered again earlier this year after criticism of how the contract for the project was awarded. The Paterson administration dropped its support of the winning bidder and state officials reopened the selection process. Paterson has said a new developer is expected to be chosen by Aug. 1. NYRA has run Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga since 1955. The Belmont meet ends July 18. Racing then shifts upstate to the lucrative Saratoga session from July 23-Sept. 6. Calif. racing board allows Oak Tree to move meet ARCADIA, Calif. — The California Horse Racing Board has authorized Oak Tree Racing Association to run its fall meet at another track in Southern California since the charitable association's use of Santa Anita is up in the air. Oak Tree director Sherwood Chillingworth says if the group can't make a deal with Santa Anita to run its traditional meet in September and October, it can move to Hollywood Park in Inglewood or Del Mar near San Diego. MI Developments last week voided its contract with Oak Tree after acquiring Santa Anita from Frank Stronach's Magna Entertainment Corp. through federal bankruptcy proceedings. MID officials are scheduled to discuss a new lease proposal with Chillingworth when they meet on June 4. MID says George Haines has been appointed interim president of Santa Anita and Golden Gate Fields in Northern California following Ron Charles' resignation this week. New Madrid won't run in Belmont NEW YORK — New Madrid is the latest horse to be pulled out of what has become a shrinking field for the Belmont Stakes. In a tweet on Friday race officials announced that the Tim Ice-trained colt would not appear in the third leg of the Triple Crown on June 5. No reason was given. New Madrid had one victory and one second-place finish in four lifetime starts, but he was a distant sixth last month in the Arkansas Derby. The announcement came a day after D. Wayne Lukas decided Dublin would not run, meaning no horse will appear in all three Triple Crown races. Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky were previously pulled out of the Belmont. American Cruiser wins the Belmont feature NEW YORK — American Cruiser, the 2-5 favorite, rolled to a 5-length win over Matt's a Giant on Friday in the $25,000 feature on the turf at Belmont Park. Backers of the overwhelming choice never had an anxious moment as Ramon Dominguez guided the 6-year-old gelding right to the front, and they quickly opened up a clear lead. The time was 1:07.86 over the firm course as American Cruiser logged his sixth win in 19 starts. Trained by Tony Dutrow, American Cruiser paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Matt's a Giant returned $4.60 and $3.50. Fujita paid $4.20 to show. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
